Providing a tool to engage both parents and teachers

Washoe County School District

(Reno, NV)—Following the urging of a middle school teacher who had used Edline in her own classroom, the Washoe County School District moved to implement a pilot program at all its schools to determine whether the program would not only help engage parents in their children’s education, but would impact the grade performance of the students themselves.

The results the school reported were more than heartening. Approximately 95 percent of all teachers activated their accounts. Total student usage amounted to 62 percent.

In its own evaluation of the Edline program, the district reported that “there were definite signs that this product could have a major impact on student performance.”

In an informal evaluation of student outcomes at North Valleys High School, the Director of Educational Technology asked the school to identify four teachers who had used the product and have those four teachers identify two students who thought they were impacted by the program. This produced eight students who had missed a total of 74 assignments during the first semester. However, during the second semester – having been exposed to the Edline program – the students missed only 5 assignments, and the average grade rose from a “D” to a “C.”

The positive effect on students was echoed by parents, who found that it helped their children improve in school by getting greater information, giving them access to assignments, and creating the opportunity for parents to work with the children.

“I sincerely hope that Edline is continued next year on a permanent basis,” wrote one parent. “and is adopted district-wide. It is a wonderful, and easy, way for parents to stay informed… Edline affords parents the opportunity to have a more proactive role in their children’s education.” Another parent declared, “So far (my son’s) grade has gone up two grades since we’ve started tracking his progress on Edline.” An additional parent wrote, “Without Edline I am afraid my daughter would be failing most of her classes.”

The district sees the greatest challenge in building usage of Edline as professional development with teachers, to enable them to understand the strengths and opportunities of Edline in their classes. It has recommended both online and face-to-face professional development in order to increase the percentage of teachers participating in the program.

It has also recommended that the district “consider the need of a policy to require the use of Edline by all secondary school teachers” and the design of a media campaign to “let parents know about this product and how to use it.”

One Life Science teacher in the distrcit was identified as a highly effective user of the Edline product. In that teacher’s class, 36 percent of the students received a failing grade during the first semester, but in the second semester (using Edline), the number dropped to 20 percent. This teacher asked his students to fill out a voluntary survey, and of the 34 students that responded, 71 percent said Edline “helped their grade in class.”

Edline has become a tool that works in the Washoe County School District.
