“ The best part is that I don't have to remember to go looking for grades, when new grades are available, an email says so. All I have to do is log on and type in my screen name and password. Then I am either pleasantly surprised or rather annoyed.”

E.D. White's 'Edline' enhances parent-teacher-student communications

Bayou Catholic - November 23, 2003

E.D. White Catholic High School in Thibodaux not only has had recent updates to its physical plant, the school also boasts cutting edge technology, and in the center of it all is Edline, a piloting project which is enhancing parent-teacher-student communication.

Edline is a companion website to the school's website which allows visitors to the website to see personalized school information using individual access codes. Through the Internet, parents get information on their child's grades, school news, assignments, calendars, activities and schedules.

"Edline is fascinating for parents," says David Boudreaux, E.D. White principal. "I've received more positive responses than I would have imagined."

The school is the only one in the diocese to pilot Edline and is one of several statewide doing so. E.D. White has been participating in the piloting project since the beginning of the school year and more and more teachers are getting involved in the voluntary program.

"We'd hoped for eight to twelve teachers to participate," says Jeanette Labat, academic assistant principal. "Now we have over half of the faculty (about 20) participating."

Not only have the faculty been interested in using Edline, they are going far and beyond what was expected. Labat had hoped that teachers would use Edline for posting schedules, grades and activities, but has found that faculty has been using Edline to post PowerPoint notes and graphs and assignments on their class pages.

The site even offers a monthly calendar, which is individualized for each student in the school.

When E.D. White began using Edline, there was some concern for teachers and faculty that there would be more work involved than before. However, Boudreaux and Labat say they and the teachers have found the program easy to use and "a great help to the students."

Labat says that teachers were already responsible for using electronic grading. "It's just a few more clicks" to post their grades on Edline…

For students who don't have email or the Internet at home, Boudreaux says that hard copies are offered from the teachers to these students. "We don't mandate anything on Edline."

The project had been running smoothly thus far, according to Boudreaux who says, "We haven't had any misuse, no major technical problems."

He has been asked by some concerned parents whether or not their children can tap into grades on Edline and change their grades. "This isn't a problem," he explains, "because the grades are on an in-house administrative server and a copy is sent to a server at another location, so they see a copy of their grades. There is no way to tamper with the grades," he assures.

Both Boudreaux and Labat are enthusiastic about the growing use of technology through Edline. Boudreaux considers many possibilities in conjunction with the acceptance of Edline in the school....

"We are looking at the possibility of every teacher in the school having a laptop," which will increase the ease of the faculty communicating with parents and students through Edline. He also envisions the posting of the school newsletter on the Internet, which would save thousands of dollars on mailouts.

Edline is only one of the several advances in E.D. White's use of technology...

With regards to Edline, students can no longer say, "I don't have homework." Edline will reveal the facts of homework or no homework and keep parents abreast of their children's grades. There's no hiding from it and students become more accountable as a result, Boudreaux says.

He knows that the country is moving into a more and more technological age and E.D. White is on top of the game. "It's going to this," he says. "We might as well start with it now."
