“ The best part is that I don't have to remember to go looking for grades, when new grades are available, an email says so. All I have to do is log on and type in my screen name and password. Then I am either pleasantly surprised or rather annoyed.”

Internet changes the face of school work

San Mateo County Times - August 21, 2003

Parents at Aragon High School monitor grades with it or use it to keep up with class assignments.

For teacher Robin Klein, it can make topics for kindergartners -- like worms -- come alive.

The Internet has become an innovative, indispensable part of teaching and learning in San Mateo County...

At San Mateo's Aragon High School, every teacher, student and parent is given accounts with Edline, a Web site that allows users to browse teacher's Web sites and lists of assignments, even students' current grades.

Funded through money the school received from a state technology grant, the service also allows teachers to fill in a template and create their own Web pages — a plus for the less-than tech savvy.

Students' accounts can be tailored to the classes they're taking, so they don't have to search around for information, said Cheri Dartnell, an Aragon technology coordinator and teacher, who helped bring the program to the school.

What's more, said Aragon Principal Kirk Black, it provides a link between parents and teachers, and can help parents play an active role in their child's education.

"It's a good incentive for kids if they're not doing well. They'll say, 'Look at Edline. I'm doing well now,'" Black said. "Conversely ... if kids are falling off the track, parents can catch it sooner. It's a good safety net and it's a good motivator."

And that can mean an opportunity for parents to intervene before their child receives a bad report card.

"It gets parents to become involved on a more regular basis than every six weeks," adds Dartnell.
