Parent Involvement: Making a Difference for LCHS Students

HAMLIN - Although parent involvement tends to decrease as children age from elementary to high school, studies show that regardless of income and background, students with parents who are involved in their schooling are more likely to experience academic achievement.
In March 2009, Lincoln County High School received a grant for $2,500 from the West Virginia Department of Education to increase parent/family engagement and communication. The goals of the grant are to increase the graduation and the number of parents using the web communication tool, Edline, and create a listing of parent e-mail accounts for school bulletins.
Many parents are involved at home, but a partnership with the child's school can further support their academic achievement. The No Child Left Behind Act defines parent involvement as "the participation of parents in regular, two-way, and meaningful communication involving students academic, learning and other school activities." This includes simple activities such as reading with children; exercising routines in homework, meals and regular bedtimes; monitoring the use of television and Internet; and offering praise and encouragement.
To assist parents in becoming active partners in their child's academic development, LCHS currently uses Edline, School Messenger, and open houses to regularly communicate with parents. Email provides an efficient way to communicate information about upcoming events and assignments. By using email in addition to the current methods, a stronger parent-school relationship will be developed.
LCHS has organized spring workshops to invite parent and community involvement in students' academic careers. Parents will learn how to become partners with teachers by using tools such as Edline.
One such workshop will be held on Monday, April 27 from 7:00 am to 9:00 am. This workshop is applicable to many parents with topics including using Edline to check grades and communicate with teachers, the Counselor's Corner on the web page, and keeping your child safe online.
The high school will be reaching out to the parents of upcoming ninth grade students by providing informational workshops at each middle school. LCHS will also invite them to an event at the high school during Step-Up Week to tour the facility. This event will also introduce the students to the faculty and the school, set expectations for the next four years of their education, and prepare them for continuing education opportunities. LCHS will also provide an opportunity for parents of those students transitioning into the 10th grade featuring CTE Courses and Southern West Virginia Community College programs. The date and time of these workshops will soon be announced.
